On the 19th September 2019, the thematic workshop on raw material extraction in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) took place at the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH). The aim of the workshop was the exchange of information between BSH and representatives from the industry and competent authorities. The concerns of the sector were discussed. The representatives of the industry and the authorities pointed out the importance of raw material extraction in the sea to secure the raw material demand for Germany. The demand for sand and gravel could not be met from land-based sources. For the extraction of hydrocarbons, there were areas in the North Sea which promise natural gas deposits.
As part of the maritimes spatial plan revision, the BSH will take into account the requirements of raw material extraction and its interaction with other marine uses.
