As part of our work in the North Sea Energy Cooperation, BSH hosted a workshop on mitigation measures. 40 experts from neighbouring European countries discussed measures to avoid and reduce the ecological impact of offshore wind energy. The workshop was financially supported by the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management.
Background
North Seas countries have ambitious goals for offshore wind energy in order to achieve climate neutrality goals and meet the increasing demand for electricity. The North Seas Energy Cooperation (NSEC) supports and facilitates the implementation of these ambitions including the offshore grid development in the North Seas.
The large-scale installation of offshore wind energy has impacts on the ecology of the North Seas both in the installation and in the operational phase. As such, member countries have carried out research and have taken efforts to implement measures to prevent, mitigate or compensate these effects.
Aim of the workshop
In order to improve mitigation measures, it is necessary to assess and share what research has been done in terms of prevention, mitigation and compensation (mitigation+), what measures are currently being implemented by North Seas countries and investigate whether there is potential for novel measures to be implemented.
Catalogue of mitigation measures
As part of the NSEC Action Agenda, adopted at the Ministerial Conference in November 2023, a catalogue of mitigation measures and best practices will be developed that comprises proportionate and effective measures to mitigate negative ecological impacts resulting from offshore wind energy development, associated cable infrastructure and platforms.
In order to establish such a catalogue, this mitigation workshop has been organized to obtain valuable insights from experts and to discuss recent approaches and opportunities for collaboration.
Noise mitigation standard
The BSH is responsible for the approval of offshore wind farms and monitors the noise input caused by pile driving during the construction of offshore wind turbines. More information about noise thresholds and noise reduction techniques can be found at the BSH homepage.
