Current status of the revision of the maritime spatial plans for the German EEZ

The 2009 maritime spatial plans for the German exclusive economic zone (EEZ) are currently being updated by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community (BMI) together with the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH). Starting in the fall of 2020, a participation process was conducted on the draft plan, where the public and authorities were able to comment (more information can be found on the BSH website). As a result, the draft plan was partially amended; the updated draft plan was submitted for coordination with the federal ministries affected in their interests at the end of February 2021. A second national and international stakeholder consultation of the coordinated draft plan is intended for May. The new spatial development plan is expected to come into force in the third quarter of 2021 as a regulation issued by the BMI.
